A very rare and attractive stater of Lysmachos

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.52 g, 12 h), Kalchedon, circa 205-190. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left, holding Nike, crowning the king's name, in her right hand and leaning with her left arm on shield decorated with lion's head; behind, transverse spear; in inner left field, monogram; in exergue, bull to left, head facing, and ΘPA. CNG 58 (2001), 370 (same dies). Müller 358 var. (differing monogram and without ΘPA on the reverse). H. Seyrig: Monnaies Hellénistiques de Byzance et de Calcédoine, in: Essays Robinson, p. 196 and pl. 25, 26 var. (same obverse die, but differing monogram and without ΘPA on the reverse). Very rare. A lovely piece of bold Hellenistic style. With a faint scratch on the obverse and a small cut on the edge, otherwise, extremely fine.
